Reading the numbers
Across the 29 model years of the GMC Sierra 1500 in this data, 2019 ranks 3rd by complaint volume — 2014 draws the most.
Filings are rising — 534 in the last three years against 154 in the three before. For a vehicle this age that usually points to a wear-related failure owners are hitting now.
The median odometer reading at the time of complaint was 11,000 miles.
In owners' own words
The starter started dragging about a year ago and on November 12 the 2019 GMC truck would not start. We had it towed to Harper GMC in Minden, La. They told us the motor was locked up. This vehicle has a little over 40,000 miles on it. Has always been parked in a carport out of the weather and still looks brand new. I see where 2021 GMC trucks have a recall on the motor and this is the same problem with our 2019. Engine
There was a catastrophic internal engine failure, due to cam/lifter/bearing issues. This caused the timing chain and tensioner to jump and the engine to be out of alignment. This caused the valves to all be bent as a result. I believe that this has been an issue for longer than what GM has originally recalled for, and I am submitting this complaint because I read that there is an active investigation into this. Engine
My vehicle is at the dealership now - it wasnât starting properly, started always getting low on oil which I took to the dealership for them to monitor- and then the check engine light came on- once that came on just last Thursday I did not drive the vehicle except to the dealership to be inspected - which my appt was Monday and they found metal shavings in the oil and said the whole engine needs replacement!
